US legislators urged to keep toy retail going in letter campaign extolling educational and emotional virtues of toys, as families enter self-isolation

US Toy Association campaigns to keep toy stores open thumbnail

The Toy Association has spearheaded a campaign to grant toy stores exemption from temporary closure during the pandemic.

Toy firms have been invited to join a grassroots letter campaign aimed a local legislators, underscoring the ‘essential role of toys and play in home learning for millions of American children’, who can no longer attend school or daycare due to the coronavirus.

The letter argues that easy access to toys will be hugely beneficial for families.

“During this tumultuous time, toys provide an increasingly invaluable role in enhancing home learning. They also help alleviate the stress felt by families navigating uncertain and frightening circumstances,” a segment reads.

Ed Desmond, Executive Vice President of External Affairs at The Toy Association, says it is working tirelessly to “ensure that toys and games remain accessible to families”.

“We encourage legislators to keep the doors open for toy businesses so that they can continue operating and providing toys – which are a source of comfort and happiness to so many – during these unprecedented times,” he adds.

In addition to the educational and emotional benefits of toys and play, the letter underscores the toy industry’s $97.2 billion economic impact, tax contribution and the fact that it supports more than 623,000 jobs. It also emphasizes the toy industry’s ability and commitment to safeguarding all employees from transmission and infection.
