Vic Bertrand, the former Chief Innovation Officer of Mega Bloks and son of the plastic block maker’s founder Victor Bertrand Sr., has joined Toys R Us Canada as its new president and CEO.

Vic has spent the past 18 months on the retailer’s board after it was purchased by Fairfax Holdings Limited, a major investor in Mega Bloks successor Mega Brands until its sale to Mattel in 2014, and brings nearly three decades of experience in toys to the role, having overseen all aspects of the Mega’s global consumer products lines, forging partnerships with retailers around the globe.

“In 1986, when my father made his first journey into international sales from Canada, it was Toys ‘R’ Us founder Charles Lazarus who noticed his tiny display in a crowded showroom and gave my father his first international order,” says Vic.

“It’s an absolute honour to join the Toys ‘R’ Us Canada team and to partner once again with Fairfax for this exciting new chapter.”

Vic takes over from former boss Melanie Teed-Murch, who announced her departure this summer after more than 20 years with the company.

Fairfax president Paul Rivett says: “I am very pleased to have such a seasoned toy veteran lead Toys ‘R’ Us Canada as president and CEO, bringing his entrepreneurial passion, global experience and vision to these incredible brands. Vic’s immediate focus will be the revitalization of the Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us Canada businesses and the re-imagining of our customer experience.”

Fairfax Financial Holdings bought TRU Canada for CAN$300m last summer.
