Forbidden Planet Intl opens one of Europe’s biggest pop culture stores thumbnail

Forbidden Planet International will this weekend open one of the largest pop culture emporiums in Europe.

After more than 30 years on Buchanan Street in Glasgow, Scotland, the retailer is moving to new premises a few minutes up the road on Sauchiehall Street. the new location is a three-storey property that is around seven times the size - and, on its Facebook page, promises "seven times the fun".

The store will welcome shoppers for the first time this Saturday, 9 November with a grand opening event. It will be the biggest comic shop in the UK and one of the largest and most comprehensive stores in Europe offering licensed toys, collectables and pop culture ephemera from comics, sci-fi, fantasy, movies and more.

"Work is well and truly underway at the new store and it is a busy but exciting time for everyone,” says Kevin O’Donnell, Retail Manager of the Glasgow store.

Although staff will be a little sad to leave their original home and feel “strange” to be in a shop of such magnitude, Kevin says witnessing the store come together has been a “real thrill”.

Visitors to the new store will be met by an impressive eight-foot tall Funko Pop Chewbacca statue - a sight that will be familiar to any visitor of the collectable company's Toy Fair stand over the years - and a feature that could only be included in a store of this size.

The larger footprint also brings its share of benefits, including the ability to welcome more interests and fandoms to the shelves.

“We will now have three floors,” Kevin says, “a new gaming section, manga and much more… We have also employed eight more staff for Sauchiehall Street.”

Post launch, Forbidden Planet International will host special events and signing days for fans to meet the artists and writers behind their favourite fiction.
