Barbie will take a starring role in the September issue of Vogue, a high-profile and much-touted edition guest edited by the Duchess of Sussex.

To honour Barbie’s 60th anniversary, and celebrate the diversity of its dolls, British Vogue invited six leading young designers to dress a Barbie in their signature style.

Matty Bovan, Mowalola, Richard Malone, Art School, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY and Supriya Lele each dressed a doll from the new line of Barbie Fashionista dolls, enrobing them in miniature interpretations of key looks from their collections.

Styled by Poppy Kain, each designer was shot by Stas Komarovski alongside their respective Barbie, before speaking to Fashion New Editor Olivia Singer about their choices, and digging into the key characteristics and design details behind each mini outfit.

Adwoa Aboah and Yara Shahidi, who appear on the cover and within the British Vogue September issue, were also created as Barbie dolls earlier this year as part of the Barbie Shero programme, honouring them as inspirational women.

Founding Gurls Talk, an online community for young women to discuss issues such as mental health, education and selfcare, Adwoa Aboah was honoured by Barbie for her vocal and passionate support of girls, and for using her platform to empower them.

Other pioneering women given a Barbie makeover as part of the Shero initiative include, principal dancer Misty Copeland, US Olympian fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, and writer and director Ava Duvernay.

The issue is available on newsstands and digital marketplaces today.
