Tom Hanks is set to star in Mattel’s latest toy movie adaptation, a revival of its space race-era astronaut figure Major Matt Mason.
The live-action movie will be based on a short story written by Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon, according to Variety, adapted for the screen by Akiva Goldsman, who has worked with Hanks previously on The Da Vinci Code and its sequel Angels & Demons.
The movie will be co-produced by Mattel Films and Paramount Pictures, which recently appointed Mattel master toy partner for its Top Gun franchise, including next year’s sequel starring Tom Cruise.
The Major Matt Mason toys were released in the mid-1960s at the height of the US-Russia space race. The character lives and works on the moon and has a supporting cast of spacefarers and extra terrestrials.
A director has yet to be attached to project and no release window has been given.
