Avengers: Endgame has taken the crown from Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody as the UK’s fastest-selling digital download movie.
The Marvel blockbuster was downloaded 335,400 times in its first week on sale, according to the Official Charts Company, far outpacing the 265,000 copies Bohemian Rhapsody sold in the same launch window when it set the previous record back in February.
Endgame’s predecessor Avengers: Infinity War was snapped up 253,000 times digitally upon its launch.
The mammoth sales for Avenegrs: Endgame are likely to be boosted by two big factors – beyond its general popularity, and the fact it broke all box office records around the world earlier this year.
Firstly, the movie has yet to release on Blu-ray, or the decreasingly popular DVD format, meaning fans have no choice but to go the digital route if they want to dive back in to the concluding chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s third phase. It will be available for physical release in less than a week’s time on 2 September.
There’s also the matter of streaming. Whereas in the past Disney’s Marvel movies appeared on Netflix, Avengers: Endgame will be held back for the launch of Disney Plus, the entertainment giant’s forthcoming streaming service. Disney Plus will launch in the US, Canada and The Netherlands in late November, followed by a roll out in Australia and New Zealand a week later. But there has been no time frame announced for the service’s UK debut – though Disney says it expects Disney Plus to be available in all major markets within two years.
This is just the latest record for Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest-grossing film ever with a global gross of $2.79bn.
